The Division of Literature and Languages is one of the largest Divisions in the University. It usually registers over 500 students in its first year modules and each summer graduates 160 or more single and joint Honours students. The Division currently has 38 academic and four academic members of staff.
On these webpages you will find further information about courses offered in the Division, our research activities, and the specific interests of individual members of staff. Current students can also access important details and documents relating to their course.
About English at Stirling
The Division's teaching programmes grow out of the nature of the subject, the research interests of members of staff and the needs and wishes of students. These interests and concerns tend to focus on certain areas - notably nineteenth and twentieth-century writing, postcolonial writing in English, Scottish culture and literature, Renaissance and seventeenth-century writing, American literature, critical theory, publishing studies, women's studies, language and linguistics - but, while the Department may have particular strengths in these areas, its teaching is deliberately broad-based. It offers a wide range of modules, giving students the opportunity to study a great many aspects of English language and literature. In the latest Student Satisfaction Survey, English Studies at Stirling gained a satisfaction rating of 100%, the only department in the UK to do so .
