A major Research Grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Board in 2002, and again in 2005, was awarded to Professor Emeritus Douglas Mack of the University of Stirling, who, along with Gillian Hughes, acts as General Editor of the Stirling/South Carolina Research Edition of the Collected Works of James Hogg. In collaboration with the University of South Carolina, the S/SC Research Edition aims to publish Hogg's prose, his poetry, his plays, and his letters. When complete, the Edition will run to thirty-four volumes.

Volumes are numbered in the order of their publication in the Stirling / South Carolina Research Edition.
