My research interests are mainly in nineteenth and early twentieth century British poetry in the wider European context of its relationship with art, cultural commentary, and philosophy. I published a book in this subject area, With Poetry and Philosophy (Cambridge, 2007) and a number of shorter anthology contributions and articles, including an edited volume (with Lucia Aiello), Nationalism, Identity and Philosophy (Naples, 2004). I focus principally on the work of Hardy, Hopkins, Browning, and Swinburne, and would especially welcome inquiries from research students interested in working these areas. I have a research and teaching interest in the relationship of literature, trauma andmemory and work closely on the relationship of poetry with melancholy. I have an ongoing interest in the literary criticism and critical theories of Ernst Bloch, Georg Lukács, and Theodor Adorno, and I have published a small number of articles in this area. I am currently preparing an edited collection examining the relationship between melancholy, modernity, and literature. I am the 'General Editor of the Journal of Literature and Trauma Studies'. |
