My research interests are in eighteenth-century literature and culture, Romanticism, women writers of the nineteenth century, and the history of reading. I have published a number of articles on Jane Austen, nineteenth-century literature and culture, and the history of reading. With Jane Slinn, I am the editor of The Concept and Practice of Conversation, 1688-1848 (Newcastle, 2007). I recently wrote the general introduction to The Complete Works of Jane Austen for Cambridge Scholars Publishing (Newcastle, 2009), and curated the bicentennial exhibition of Austen’s arrival at Chawton House at the Chawton House Library. I am currently working on a monograph on Jane Austen and her readers, to be published with Anthem Press. With Shafquat Towheed and Rosalind Crone, I am the editor of The History of Reading: A Reader (Routledge, forthcoming) and with Bob Owens, of the History of Reading: Evidence from the British Isles, c. 1750-1950, forthcoming with Palgrave. I am a member of the management team of the Reading Experience Database 1450-1945 (www.open.ac.uk/Arts/reading). |
