Assessment

The Department uses a method of 'formative assessment' in which students' work is evaluated on an on-going basis throughout the degree, rather than 'summatively' at the end of a module or year.

Student

There are no exams in English Studies, so all grades are based on coursework. Essays are submitted anonymously to ensure fairness, and double-marked to ensure consistency. Staff approach marking not only as a way of evaluating the quality of students' work, but as a key means of providing constructive feedback and encouragement. The use of essay coversheets allows tutors to provide detailed and specific guidance, which they will expect to be considered in the preparation of future work. If you have a question about any assessed coursework, or wish to discuss how you might improve, you should make an appointment with your tutor.

See section C of the Department's Undergraduate Handbook for further details about the regulations and procedures governing Assessment (including the Department's grading scheme, penalties for lateness, and University-wide guidance on plagiarism).
